Sisal Fiber for Sale

Wholesale sisal fiber comes from the leaves of the agave plant Agave sisalana. Buyers value it for its strength, durability, ability to stretch and good uptake of dyes, and like coir it resists deterioration in saltwater. Higher grades are spun into yarn for the carpet industry, and sisal is now widely used as a natural reinforcement in polymer composites. Fiber Extraction

Fiber is extracted by decortication: leaves are crushed and scraped by a rotating wheel set with blunt knives so that only the fibers remain. In Kenya, where sisal is grown on large estates, leaves go to a central decortication plant where water washes away the waste parts of the leaf.

The fiber is then dried, brushed and baled for export. Correct drying matters because fiber quality depends largely on moisture content. Dry fibers are machine-combed and sorted into grades, mainly by length, colour and cleanliness.
